TrayMinder is one of the better-known clear aligner tracker apps on the iOS App Store. It works. It is mature. A lot of Invisalign and Spark patients use it without complaint. But "popular" and "right for you" are not the same thing, and there are real reasons people look for a TrayMinder alternative.
The two most common reasons I hear: it is a subscription, and it counts up instead of down. Add the App Store privacy label that flags analytics collection and you have three good reasons to compare what else is out there.
I built one of the apps in this comparison (OutTime). I am going to flag that upfront and then try very hard to be fair to TrayMinder and to the alternatives. This is a feature, pricing, and privacy comparison — none of these apps treat or diagnose anything; they are all timers and schedule tools, and your orthodontist sets your wear plan.
Why Look for a TrayMinder Alternative
Before evaluating alternatives, it helps to be specific about what people actually want to replace.
- Subscription fatigue. Aligner treatment lasts months. A subscription on top of treatment costs gets old fast.
- Count-up vs countdown. TrayMinder counts how long your aligners have been in. To know how much out-time you have left today, you have to subtract from your target in your head. A countdown does the math for you.
- Privacy. TrayMinder's App Store privacy label declares usage data and identifiers linked to your identity. Health-adjacent data being collected by a third-party tracker is a real concern for some users.
- Account requirement. Accounts mean email addresses, password resets, and a permanent record of your wear-time history sitting on someone else's server.
If none of those four points bother you, TrayMinder is genuinely a fine app. If any of them do, here are the alternatives worth a look.
Comparison Table
| App | Price | Timer | Brands | Account | Privacy Label |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TrayMinder | Subscription | Count up | Any | Required | Data linked to you |
| OutTime | Free + $9.99 once | Count down | Any | None | Data Not Collected |
| My Invisalign | Free | Count up | Invisalign only | Required | Health data linked |
| TrayTime | Free + IAP | Count up | Any | Optional | Limited collection |
| Smilo | Free + IAP | Count up | Any | None | Limited collection |
| AlignMate | Free + IAP | Count up | Any | Required | Usage data linked |
Privacy labels reflect the apps' own App Store disclosures at the time of writing. Verify the current label on each app's App Store page before committing.
OutTime — The Closest Direct Alternative
OutTime is the alternative I built. Here is the honest case for it as a TrayMinder replacement.
What it has that TrayMinder does not:
- Countdown budget. You see how much out-time you have left today, not how long your aligners have been in. No mental math.
- One-time purchase. $9.99 once for Pro, owned forever. No subscription.
- Zero data collection. App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected." No account, no server, no analytics.
- Retroactive session editing. Forgot to tap the button after lunch? Drag a slider or pick a quick-select duration. Your data stays accurate even when you are not.
- Live Activities. Your countdown timer appears on the Dynamic Island and Lock Screen while your aligners are out.
- On-device timelapse. Smile Timeline photos can be rendered into a shareable MP4 directly on your phone. Nothing uploaded.
What TrayMinder has that OutTime does not:
- A larger user base and longer track record (TrayMinder launched in 2017).
- More mature side-by-side photo comparison views.
- A track record of community engagement around aligner tracking that newer apps have not built yet.
If you want a count-down, one-time-purchase, zero-data tracker that works with any clear aligner brand, OutTime is the most direct replacement. If you want the biggest established user base and the longest history of photo-comparison features, TrayMinder still wins on those.
The Other Alternatives
My Invisalign (Align Technology, free)
My Invisalign is the official Align Technology app. It is free and integrates with ClinCheck — your tray schedule is populated automatically from your orthodontist's plan, and your wear log can be shared with the practice.
The trade-offs: it is Invisalign-only. If you switch to Spark or ClearCorrect mid-treatment, the app no longer fits. It requires an Align account. The privacy label discloses health data linked to your identity. For Invisalign-only patients who want ClinCheck integration, it is the obvious choice. For anyone else, look elsewhere.
TrayTime
TrayTime is the closest count-up competitor to TrayMinder. It supports any aligner brand and offers a clean, focused interface. It is free with in-app purchases for advanced features. Privacy posture is more conservative than TrayMinder, but it still uses the count-up timer model that some users want to escape.
Smilo
Smilo markets "no account required" and works with any brand. It is newer than the others on this list, which means less long-term track record but also less accumulated bloat. Like TrayMinder, it uses a count-up timer.
AlignMate
AlignMate is brand-agnostic and offers solid wear-time tracking. It requires an account and collects usage data. Functionally it sits between TrayMinder and TrayTime in maturity.
How to Switch from TrayMinder
Switching apps mid-treatment is mostly painless. The wear-time data you collected in TrayMinder lives in TrayMinder; most aligner apps don't import each other's history. Here is the practical playbook:
- Export your TrayMinder history first. If you want a record of your past wear-time, export it from TrayMinder before you stop using the app. Most apps support some form of share or CSV.
- Download the replacement app. If you pick OutTime, the free tier is enough to get started — you do not need to pay anything on day one.
- Set your daily out-time budget. Use the same number your orthodontist gave you. OutTime asks during onboarding.
- Set your current tray number and date. Most apps including OutTime ask which tray you are currently on. Enter it once and the calendar populates forward.
- Cancel your TrayMinder subscription. Don't forget this step — uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.
The whole process takes about ten minutes. Going forward, your daily wear log lives in the new app.
The Bottom Line
If your reason for leaving TrayMinder is the subscription, OutTime is the cleanest alternative — same feature surface, no recurring charge.
If your reason is the count-up timer, only OutTime offers a countdown out-time budget. Everything else on this list (TrayMinder, TrayTime, My Invisalign, Smilo, AlignMate) counts up.
If your reason is privacy, OutTime is the only app on this list with a "Data Not Collected" App Store privacy label as of May 2026. Smilo is close on the no-account front but the data-collection profile is less proven.
If you want ClinCheck integration and you are Invisalign-only, the answer is My Invisalign even though it is not a TrayMinder competitor in the conventional sense — it does a different job for a different audience.
None of these apps will move your teeth. The aligners do that. The app just helps you remember to wear them.
